Jig Walks

Charleston · Intermediate

A wrapped-up, side-by-side walk made of kicks and steps, which comes in several partnered variations.

  1. Side by side, facing the same way, an arm around each other's waist or shoulders.
  2. Kick step, kick step: small low kicks, one foot then the other, the rhythm matters more than the height.
  3. Then step, step and repeat: the step-steps can travel forward, back, or twist you in and out together.

Understanding the move

How it goes

  • Here the lead's right arm goes around the follow's waist and the follow's left arm across the lead's shoulders; the lead's free arm opens out to the side.
  • The kicks cross slightly in front of the standing leg, foot at ankle height, knees soft.

Usual mistakes

  • A loose hold that lets you drift apart: keep the hips close to travel and pivot together.
  • Sending the kick far out in front: keep it under the body, or the next step comes late.
