Behind-the-Back Pass

6-count · Beginner

A variation on the six-count side pass where the lead briefly turns their back to the follow, who walks around behind them.

  1. Starts in open position, like a side pass.
  2. The lead takes the follow's wrist with their right hand, then passes it back to their left behind their back.
  3. Ends open, places swapped, back to the lead's left hand in the follow's right.

Understanding the move

Count by count

  • 1-2: during the rock step, the lead's right arm comes up and over, in front of the follow, to the follow's right wrist, without gripping.
  • 3-4: the follow passes on the lead's right and lets themselves be led, arms with good tone; the lead turns to their left, showing their back.
  • 5-6: the hand changes on this triple step, the lead's back still turned; they turn around as they finish.

Usual mistakes

  • The lead lets go with one hand before the other has it: the connection drops.
  • The lead yanks the follow's arm instead of turning.
