Swing festivals within reach of French-speaking Switzerland

You rarely miss a festival because you did not want to go, you miss it because you hear about it three days after registration closed. The swing scene in French-speaking Switzerland has exactly this problem. The weeknight socials travel perfectly well by word of mouth, while full festival weekends often stay under the radar until it is too late. Those are the ones you need to book months ahead. And when you finally go looking, you land on worldwide calendars sorted by country, which never answer the one question that actually matters. What can you reach from here?

From GenevaFrom Lausanne

Here is the answer, measured in hours of travel rather than in borders. Seventeen dates are already firm over the next twelve months, and eight more festivals have run recently without announcing their next edition. Most are festivals proper, a few are workshop weekends, and “festival” will cover both from here on. The result is not what you picture when you think "swing festival in Switzerland".

The middle of the map is empty

Out of twenty-five, exactly one is in Romandy. It is Winter Swingtime, in Lausanne, from 4 to 6 December 2026, and it has no neighbours at all: in this selection no other Romandy date has been announced, not in Geneva, not in Fribourg, not in Valais or Neuchâtel. For a region where socials run every week of the year, that gap is genuinely striking.

The emptiness changes what this page is. It is not a local calendar, it is a travel resource, because dancing a whole weekend from Romandy almost always means leaving. The good news, and this is the whole point of the two maps above, is that you do not have to go far. Eleven of the firm dates sit within two hours of Geneva and three within two hours of Lausanne, and the difference comes down to direction rather than distance.

To the south-west: Savoie, Grenoble and Lyon

This is the densest side of the map. The Savoie Balboa Festival ran in Drumettaz-Clarafond from 25 to 27 September 2026, in the Salle Didelle between Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry. Count fifty-seven minutes of driving from Geneva and one hour thirty-seven from Lausanne. It is pure balboa, and its next edition has no date yet.

Grenoble stands out, with six dates of its own, one hour and forty minutes from Geneva and two hours nineteen from Lausanne. The Story Swing Festival holds its very first edition from 30 October to 1 November 2026, at the Agora in Saint-Ismier just outside the city, on an Orient Express theme, with four dances on the programme: lindy hop, blues, balboa and solo jazz. The same association, Grenoble Swing, follows with Let It Slow Balboa from 13 to 15 November 2026, Super Flow On, a lindy hop weekend, from 26 to 28 February 2027, and Tiny Balboa from 23 to 25 April 2027. The other two are Balboa Edition weekends run by Vinnie Kat Swing, on 9 and 10 January and again on 5 and 6 June, both in 2027.

Then there is Lyon, which is easy to forget because you think "France" and picture something distant. The city is one hour and fifty-two minutes from Geneva, as close as Bern, and two hours thirty-one from Lausanne. The Lyon Swing Festival runs from 20 to 22 November 2026 at 100% Danse in Saint-Pierre-de-Chandieu, south-east of the city, in lindy hop and solo jazz. Back to Jitterbug follows from 23 to 25 April 2027 in nearby Chaponnay, in lindy hop and West Coast Swing.

To the north: Besançon and Basel

Swingamor took place in Morre, near Besançon, on 3 and 4 October 2026, with lindy hop and solo jazz classes and the Swing Up Orchestra on stage. Its organisers, B.Lindy, say it will be back next year, without a date yet. Morre is an hour fifty-seven of driving from Lausanne against two hours thirty-three from Geneva, which makes it one of the rare destinations that Lausanne reaches distinctly faster.

Basel has two of them. They are run by the same team, six months apart. Jitterbugs Delight opens the year from 8 to 10 January 2027, and Balboa Delight closes the season from 25 to 27 June 2027. Two hours twelve by train from Lausanne, two hours fifty from Geneva.

In the middle and to the east: Bern, Zurich, Winterthur

Bern has two of them, and it is the city where the gap between the two starting points is widest. One hour and nine minutes by train from Lausanne, against one hour fifty-one from Geneva. Rocky Balberna takes the weekend of 6 to 8 November 2026 with four balboa rooms split by level and style, plus three parties with live bands. Leapin' Lindy follows from 11 to 14 March 2027, over four days; its 2026 edition mixed lindy hop, solo jazz, collegiate shag and tap.

Zurich hosts three festivals of its own, one of which has just taken place. Balboa Lab 7 took 10 and 11 October 2026 with an intensive workshop format, two classes a day each followed by a structured practice session. Stir it! takes the weekend of 27 to 29 November 2026, with free choice of classes across lindy hop, balboa, tap, blues and solo jazz. And IsThereHop? closes the run from 26 to 29 March 2027, at the Volkshaus, over the long Easter weekend.

Count two hours eleven by train from Lausanne and two hours fifty-one from Geneva. One more festival sits a little further out, the Slow Bal Workshop in Winterthur, on 31 October and 1 November 2026: basic classes are at the Swingscouts' Swingstation, under the Hotel Wartmann at Rudolfstrasse 15, the other levels at the Alte Kaserne, Technikumstrasse 8. Further east, Swing ohne Senf in St. Gallen has announced 14 to 17 May 2027.

The train wins in Switzerland, the car wins in France

Working out both modes for every city turned up a pattern, and across this selection it is perfectly clean. All six Swiss destinations are faster by train. All five French destinations are faster by car.

The gap is sometimes wide. Zurich gains a good half hour on the rails. St. Gallen gains a good quarter of an hour. The other way round, Grenoble loses up to three quarters of an hour by train, and La Plagne goes from two and a half hours to nearly four, plus a bus up to the resort.

What that changes in practice is simple. For the Swiss destinations in this selection the train is usually the obvious choice, and you get your Friday evening back for sleeping or running through your steps. For Savoie, Grenoble and Lyon, better to find a seat in a car, even if it means sharing one. Drumettaz deserves a note of its own: the village has no station, so the figure given is the one for Aix-les-Bains.

Half the list is balboa

Here is the detail that changes how you read these maps. Of the seventeen festivals with firm dates, seven are pure or mostly balboa, which makes close to half the list noticeably less relevant if lindy hop is the only thing you dance.

Balboa has a particularly strong presence in the region, especially in Grenoble, Bern and Basel. It is also an opportunity. Balboa is danced close, it works on fast tempos and on crowded floors, and several of these weekends, like Rocky Balberna and the Slow Bal Workshop, have a level for complete beginners to the style. A festival is a good place to try it, precisely because you have the time and you are surrounded by people who came for it.

The ones that come back every year

Eight festivals within reach have not announced their next date yet. They matter when you plan a season, even if you cannot book them today or pin them to a weekend.

Three of them took place this autumn: the Savoie Balboa Festival, Swingamor and Balboa Lab. Savoie ça Swing also holds the Savoie Hop Festival in Drumettaz in February (6 to 8 February in 2026). Lyon has Swing Roar, Gon'a Swing's lindy hop and solo jazz festival, which held its tenth edition from 27 February to 1 March 2026. Besançon has Hop'n Spring, a spring weekend run by B.Lindy, listed for 29 to 31 May in 2026.

Two summer fixtures round out the list: Camp Balboa, a week-long balboa camp held in Bern from 27 July to 2 August 2026, and La Plagne Swing in Savoie in August (16 to 23 August in 2026), which is a week-long camp in the mountains rather than a weekend.

How to stop missing them

Among the festivals here that publish an opening date, registration opens three to seven months ahead, and several fill up fast, so checking the calendar only when the urge to travel arrives can already be too late.

Three habits are enough to fix that. Put the firm dates from this page in your calendar now, even without knowing whether you will go. Follow the organisers in the areas you are most likely to travel to rather than subscribing to every worldwide calendar, which buries the three useful festivals under two hundred others. And for the annual ones, remember the month rather than the date, then go and check six weeks before.
