Tuck Turn

6-count · Beginner

The follow's basic turn from closed: the frame opens and closes like a book, and that tuck is what launches the turn.

  1. Start in closed position.
  2. On 1-2, rock step: the lead opens the frame; on 3-4, they draw the follow in to face them and send them on 4.
  3. The follow spins clockwise under the lead's left arm on 5-6 and ends in open.

Understanding the move

Count by count

  • 1-2: the lead's right arm on the follow's back does the guiding; the follow steps back with a slight rotation, not straight back.
  • 3-4: the follow's free left arm opens at shoulder height, no gripping; the lead's left hand lifts a little, palm to palm.
  • 4: the lead's right arm drops off the follow's back to let them through.

Usual mistakes

  • The lead pushes with the arm instead of giving momentum with the body.
  • The follow takes off before being led: the turn loses the rhythm.
