Swing Out with Swivels (follow)

8-count · Intermediate

A swing out variation where the follow comes back to the lead by pivoting on their feet instead of walking.

  1. Swing out. At the end, on 8, the stretch opens the follow's torso and hips to the left.
  2. On 1 the follow twists toward the arm held by the lead, then swivels the other way on 2, knees together.
  3. They travel in on the swivels and the triple step, no rush: closed comes only after 3.

Understanding the move

Count by count

  • 8: the lead keeps their left arm out at waist height, no pulling; they stay in place, knees bent.
  • 1-2: feet close together; on each swivel, the follow's free arm opens out to the side.
  • 3: a big step toward the lead; the follow's free arm can go up over their head.
  • 4: the lead's right hand finds the follow's back again, and the swing out carries on in closed.

Usual mistakes

  • The lead pulls the follow in: there's no time left for the swivels.
  • The follow's feet drift apart: the pivot turns into a walk.
