Surprise Swing Out

8-count · Advanced

A swing out launched straight out of the follow's turn, with no pause in between.

  1. From a turn or a spin, the follow comes back toward the lead.
  2. No rock step: as the turn ends the lead catches the follow in closed and goes straight into the swing out rotation.
  3. Send out like a swing out, ends open.

Not to be confused with: Swing Out from Closed

Understanding the move

Count by count

  • 1-2: the lead stays in place, knees soft, while the follow turns on their way in.
  • 3-4: the lead takes a big step toward the follow; their right hand lands on the follow's back as soon as the follow faces them.
  • Coming out of the rotation, the lead's right hand leaves the follow's back; the left hand keeps the connection all the way to open.

Usual mistakes

  • The lead is still waiting after 2 instead of stepping in on 3-4: they catch the follow too late and the turn dies.
  • The lead adds a rock step out of habit: the surprise falls flat and the follow arrives early.
