Kick Away

8-count · Intermediate

A swing out variation that adds, in open position, two back kicks done together, in counterbalance.

  1. A swing out, open on 5-6.
  2. On 7 and again on 1, no rock step: hands held at arm's length, both lean in and kick a leg back, away from each other.
  3. Come back in on the 3-4 triple and carry on into the next swing out.

Not to be confused with: Scissor Kicks

Understanding the move

Count by count

  • 5-6: stay at arm's length, arms straight: that stretch is what lets you lean in without falling.
  • 7: the lead tips their torso forward, free arm stretched up and back, as a counterweight.
  • 7 and 1: the standing leg stays bent; the kicking leg bends at the knee, heel flicking up behind.
  • 3-4: big steps to come back in; the lead's right hand finds the follow's back again.

Usual mistakes

  • Bending the arms: without straight arms you can't lean in toward each other.
  • Staying upright: without leaning, the kick has no counterweight.
