Savoy Kicks

Charleston · Intermediate

A kick that strings three moves of the same leg together, front, knee, back, danced side by side wrapped up or on your own.

  1. Side by side with an arm around your partner's waist, or alone: weight on one foot, the other leg free.
  2. Kick the free leg forward, straight and low, then pull the knee up.
  3. Flick the foot back behind you and step down, then repeat.

Understanding the move

How it goes

  • In this video the lead's right arm sits across the follow's shoulders; the lead's free arm opens out to the side, the follow's stays low.
  • Both kick the same leg at the same moment, here the left.
  • As the foot goes back, the upper body tips forward a little and the free arm follows.
  • Between kicks, small steps under the body, without drifting apart.

Usual mistakes

  • Staying bolt upright as the foot goes back: let the upper body come forward a little.
  • Each kicking to their own rhythm: as a pair, the same leg goes at the same time.
