Spank the Baby

Jazz steps (solo) · Beginner

A theatrical jazz step that swings between one long diagonal and a tucked-in pose, in a six-count cycle; in this video always on the same side, though it can be danced on the other too.

  1. From feet together, lift one knee and reach that foot out to the side, the same-side arm pushing out over it.
  2. Step onto it and lean that way, the other arm trailing back: one long diagonal line.
  3. Close the feet as the trailing hand swings in to pat your behind and the other arm folds in front, like a teapot. Repeat on the same side.

Understanding the move

How it goes

  • The foot goes out to the side heel first, toes up; the head turns toward the reaching arm.
  • The diagonal holds for about two counts, the back leg straight.
  • Feet together, the teapot pose holds about as long, until the next knee lift.

Usual mistakes

  • Rushing through the diagonal: it holds for about two counts, so stretch into it.
