Jazz steps (solo) · Beginner

A jazz step that travels sideways, the legs crossing and opening in turn, with a hip twist that gives it its look.

  1. Knees soft, arms open to the sides, the step travels sideways.
  2. The front foot crosses over, then the other foot opens to the side, the hips twisting with each cross.
  3. Repeat across, then the same back the other way.

Understanding the move

How it goes

  • On the cross, the legs pass right next to each other, almost touching.
  • On the opening, the free leg's knee turns in and its heel comes off the floor.
  • The whole way, the arm on the side you're travelling to stays out at shoulder height, the other one lower; the chest keeps facing front.

Usual mistakes

  • Crossing without turning the hips: it turns into a sideways walk.
  • Steps too big: the legs cross far apart and the rhythm slips.
