8-count · Beginner

A swing out variation where the follow's hand changes hands behind their back: it ends right hand in right hand.

  1. Starts in open position, lead's left hand.
  2. Around 5, once the follow is sent out, the lead puts the follow's hand behind their back and takes it with the right hand.
  3. The follow unwinds with a turn, ends open at the other end.

Understanding the move

Count by count

  • The follow comes in close, facing the lead, left hand on the lead's shoulder; their right hand goes behind their back palm out.
  • The follow unwinds travelling down the slot, like in a swing out, not on the spot.
  • 7-8: the lead catches them on the triple step; the follow only finishes the turn halfway through it.

Usual mistakes

  • The lead lifts the hand too high or pushes it too far round the back: the shoulder twists.
  • The follow spins on the spot instead of travelling down the slot: the move loses its swing out shape.
