Scissor Kicks

Jazz steps (solo) · Intermediate

A jazz step kept close to the floor, with low, quick kicks that barely travel.

  1. Solo, knees soft, arms swinging loose.
  2. The knee lifts and crosses in front of the standing leg, then that leg shoots out straight on the diagonal: the legs open and close like scissors.
  3. Switch legs on every kick and keep going.

Understanding the move

Count by count

  • 1-2: one kick every two counts, footwork kick, step, touch; the touch goes behind.
  • The crossing knee stays low, the foot passing near the bottom of the standing leg; the kick lands heel first, toes up.
  • During the kick, the standing leg slides or hops a little the other way.
  • 3-4: same with the other leg; elbows bent, the arms pump as if running.

Usual mistakes

  • Kicking high: the kick stays low, close to the floor.
  • Bending the leg on the kick: it shoots out straight, or the scissors don't show.
