Promenade

8-count · Beginner

An eight-count move where the couple, wrapped together, makes a full turn as a unit, each partner passing in front of the other in turn.

  1. Closed, side by side: rock step on 1-2.
  2. On 3-4 the follow triples around in front to face the lead.
  3. Walk-walk on 5-6 as the lead goes around; triple on 7-8 back to the follow's side, closed again.

Understanding the move

Count by count

  • 1-2: a snug closed hold: the follow's left hand on the lead's right shoulder, joined hands in front, close to the body, at chest height.
  • 3-4: the lead stays almost in place and lets the follow pass in front; the hold doesn't change.
  • 5-6: the follow pivots almost on the spot while the lead walks around them, still wrapped up together.

Usual mistakes

  • Loosening the hold during the turn: the couple drifts apart and getting back side by side comes late.
  • The follow walks straight ahead instead of turning to face the lead.
