He Goes / She Goes

8-count · Beginner

An eight-count move where the couple, side by side with an arm around each other, briefly faces each other as one partner steps in front.

  1. Side by side with an arm around each other, facing the same way; rock step on 1-2.
  2. On 3-4 one partner walks round in front to face the other (he goes: the lead; she goes: the follow) and triples there on 5-6; the other stays put.
  3. On 7-8 triple back to the side: still arm in arm, nobody has changed sides.

Understanding the move

Count by count

  • 1-2: the lead's right arm around the follow's waist; in the video their left arm stays open to the side, no hand held in front.
  • 3-4: pass close; the arm around the back never lets go, it's what keeps the connection.
  • 5-6: face to face, almost touching; the lead's left arm stays open, like a balancing pole.

Usual mistakes

  • Drifting apart during the pass: getting back to the side comes in late.
  • The lead lets go of the follow's back while passing: closed position isn't there on 7-8.
