Tandem Charleston

Charleston · Intermediate

A Charleston where the lead dances behind the follow and leads through the hands, without facing them.

  1. The follow in front, the lead right behind, both facing forward, hands held at the follow's hips.
  2. Same feet for both: kick forward, kick back.
  3. The lead turns the follow out to exit.

Understanding the move

How it goes

  • In this video the couple starts without holding on, each swinging their arms as in solo, then the lead takes the follow's hands.
  • The lead bends forward from the hips, knees bent, to stay level with the follow's hands.
  • The lead's back kick reaches far, leg almost straight; the follow's, knee bent, stays shorter.

Usual mistakes

  • The lead stands too close: the follow's back kick lands in their legs.
  • Stiff arms: the follow gets held back instead of carried along.
