Airplane Charleston

Charleston · Intermediate

A face-to-face Charleston where the couple leans in over joined hands on every back kick, then passes through to do it again on the other side.

  1. Face to face and close, both hands held low, Charleston rhythm.
  2. On each back kick both lean in toward each other, back leg stretched straight behind: the airplane.
  3. Between kicks, step past each other and keep rotating: each kick lands on the other side.

Understanding the move

How it goes

  • Just before the back kick, the knee comes up in front.
  • During the airplane the joined hands stay between you, elbows slightly bent; the standing leg is soft.
  • Then the back leg folds, you put it down and pass shoulder to shoulder, close.

Usual mistakes

  • Staying upright or leaning back: the airplane works because both lean in toward the hands together.
  • Passing far apart: the next kick no longer lands face to face.
