Fall Off the Log

Jazz steps (solo) · Intermediate

A jazz step that shifts the weight from side to side with a look of losing balance, like someone slipping off a log.

  1. A solo step you can do alone or with a partner, often face to face.
  2. Lean and fall to one side over a lifted foot, then the other.
  3. Step through, then repeat to the other side.

Understanding the move

How it goes

  • First the free leg goes out to the side, straight, the chest leaning the other way.
  • Then the knee comes up and the body tips over that foot, arms pulled in close to the chest.
  • Catching yourself, the feet cross for a moment; the arms open wide before you go to the other side.

Usual mistakes

  • A straight standing leg: without a bent knee, the fall turns into a plain side step.
  • An upright chest: without the lean, nobody sees the fall.
