Johnny's Drop

Charleston · Beginner

A side-by-side Charleston variation where both cross a leg and sink down together, then slide straight back into the Charleston.

  1. From side-by-side Charleston: rock step on 1-2, drifting slightly apart.
  2. On 3 the outside leg swings out, on 4 it crosses in front and both sink low: the drop.
  3. Back, forward, forward on 5-6-7, then back into the Charleston.

Understanding the move

Count by count

  • 1-2: the lead's right arm stays around the follow's waist, the follow's left arm goes high across the lead's back.
  • 3: both outside legs go at the same moment, mirrored: the lead's left, the follow's right.
  • 4: on the drop, both lean in a little toward each other, heads close.

Usual mistakes

  • Crossing without bending the knees: no sink, no drop.
  • Drifting so far on the rock step that you let go of each other.
