Hacksaw

Charleston · Intermediate

A close-up partnered Charleston move where the partners take turns kicking toward each other; the balance rests on the two-hand hold.

  1. From hand-to-hand or closed Charleston.
  2. One partner kicks through between the other's legs while the other kicks around, like a saw.
  3. Swap and repeat, then exit to open.

Understanding the move

How it goes

  • Two-hand hold, elbows bent, hands at chest height: the arms keep some tone so both can lean.
  • Whoever kicks through between the other's legs, here the lead, first lifts the knee high, then unfolds the leg forward.
  • Meanwhile the other, here the follow, leans the chest toward their partner and sends the leg far back, almost straight.
  • To swap, the follow turns under the raised hands, then the roles switch.

Usual mistakes

  • Floppy arms: whoever kicks back falls away backwards.
  • Standing too far apart: the kicking leg no longer reaches between the other's legs.
