Kick Throughs

Charleston · Beginner

An open-position Charleston move where the couple opens out and closes back in with the kicks, switching sides each time.

  1. Face to face, one hand held, coming from a basic Charleston.
  2. Kick and kick-step: both kick out and away from each other on a curve until the arm stretches.
  3. The double kick brings you back in close, then the same to the other side.

Understanding the move

How it goes

  • The held hands stay low, at waist height; the free arms open out to the side during the kicks.
  • On the kick, both bodies open to the front, side by side in a V, joined hands between them.
  • Coming back in, the free arm goes onto the partner's back, almost like closed position.
  • Both stay light, with a little bounce on each kick.

Usual mistakes

  • A stiff held arm: it stretches gently at the end of the curve, then brings the other back.
  • Kicks out of sync: both kick at the same moment, mirrored.
