Boogie Forward

Jazz steps (solo) · Beginner

The flip side of the Boogie Back: you travel forward, rolling a hip circle before each step, one step every two counts.

  1. Start on eight, bringing the right hip around in a circle.
  2. Step forward onto the right foot on one, then circle the left hip and step on three.
  3. Four of these travelling forward, arms up or shoulders rolling.

Understanding the move

Count by count

  • 8: during the circle, the free leg's knee turns in toward the other and its heel lifts.
  • 1: the foot lands in front, almost in line with the other, as if on a line.
  • 2: during the next circle, the weight stays on the foot that just landed; the elbows stay bent, hands at shoulder height.

Usual mistakes

  • Putting the foot down before the circle is done: it becomes a plain walk.
  • Wide steps with the feet apart: travel along a narrow line.
