Apple Jacks

Jazz steps (solo) · Beginner

A jazz step danced almost on the spot, a side-to-side rock driven by both feet swivelling together.

  1. Knees bent, weight on the heel of one foot and the toe of the other.
  2. Lift one knee, land and swivel both feet as the weight shifts.
  3. Repeat on the other side, swaying side to side.

Not to be confused with: Fishtails

Understanding the move

Count by count

  • 1-2: the knee only comes up a little, the foot just clears the floor and the knee turns in toward the other leg; as it lands, both toes turn toward that knee's side.
  • 3-4: same with the other knee; the arms, elbows soft, ride the sway.

Usual mistakes

  • Lifting the knee too high: it turns into heavy marching instead of a bounce.
  • Swivelling just one foot: both feet turn together.
