Fishtails

Jazz steps (solo) · Beginner

A jazz step where the hips sweep side to side while the chest stays quiet, like a fish's tail.

  1. Knees bent, feet apart, chest stays facing forward.
  2. Push the hips side to side, like wiping a blackboard behind you, leaning into one hip, then the other.
  3. Keep alternating, on steps or triple steps, arms out.

Not to be confused with: Apple Jacks

Understanding the move

How it goes

  • As the hip pushes to one side, the other foot keeps just its toe on the floor or flicks up a little behind.
  • The arms stay open, roughly at shoulder height, for balance.

Usual mistakes

  • Letting the chest follow the hips: the whole body sways and the effect is gone.
  • Feet too close: without some width the hips have nowhere to go.
