Hip Catch

8-count · Intermediate

A swing out variation where the follow rotates pressed to the lead's hip, facing out, instead of facing them inside the frame.

  1. Starts in open position, one hand held, like a swing out.
  2. On 3-4 the follow comes in and the lead catches them at the hip, beside the lead and facing out. They rotate together.
  3. Sent back out on 7-8, ends in open position.

Not to be confused with: Swing Out

Understanding the move

Count by count

  • 3-4: the lead's right hand lands on the follow's hip, not on their back as in a swing out; the lead bends the knees and leans forward.
  • Through the rotation, the follow keeps walking forward, free arm reaching out in front.
  • For the exit, the hand on the hip does the sending; after that, only the lead's left hand keeps the contact.

Usual mistakes

  • The lead catches too high, on the back: it turns back into a swing out.
  • The follow brakes on arrival: the hip-to-hip rotation loses its momentum.
