Boogie Back

Jazz steps (solo) · Beginner

A jazz step that backs away in little shuffles, with a clap in front between two wide openings of the arms.

  1. Sink low with knees bent and clap in front on eight.
  2. Shuffle back right, left on and-one, opening the arms wide.
  3. Clap again and keep travelling back, add a small kick on the clap if you like.

Understanding the move

Count by count

  • 8: the chest tips forward over the knees, the hands meet in front of the chest.
  • and-1: elbows slightly bent, hands open; the feet stay hip-width apart.
  • 2: clap again, chest still forward; the clap and the opening come back every two counts.

Usual mistakes

  • Straightening up while backing away: the chest stays tipped forward.
  • Shuffles too long: keep the steps small, under the body.
