Hand-to-Hand Turn

Charleston · Intermediate

A turn in the middle of a Charleston where nobody goes under an arm: each partner turns on their own, mirroring the other.

  1. Starts in side-by-side Charleston, a little apart.
  2. Each partner spins once in place, both turning in toward each other.
  3. Back side by side, still kicking the Charleston.

Understanding the move

How it goes

  • The lead turns to their right, the follow to their left; at the first quarter turn, they look at each other.
  • The kicks carry on through the turn: a knee comes up or a leg goes back while turning.
  • In this video no hands are held during the turn; each keeps their spot to find the other at the same distance.

Usual mistakes

  • Spinning in one go on one foot: the turn happens in kicks, over several counts.
  • Turning the same way as the other: at the first quarter turn, one of you ends up facing the other's back.
